This month’s selection is “The Free and the Dead” by Jamie Holmes The next book club meeting will be Monday, June 8th at 6:30 PM. 📍 ACC Library Book description: From 1817 to 1858, a series of conflicts known as the Seminole Wars took place between the United States and the tribes of Florida as they battled for the land. Within this unconquered territory, formerly enslaved mothers and fathers and Seminole families had lived side by side for generations, building communities in the interior, beyond the reach of the growing United States. But in 1835, the young country took up arms against them, seeking to forcibly remove all Indigenous people and return their allies to slavery. In the face of this terror, tribes and bands came together across racial lines to preserve their freedom from federal interference. As the fight waged on, two men—Abraham, a free Black American, and the esteemed Creek warrior Osceola—worked together to save their lands and their people, against overwhelming odds, from America’s formidable Army of the South. A powerful and vivid exploration of an overlooked revolt and historical alliances between Afro-descendant families and Indigenous tribes, The Free and the Dead is a timeless work of history that sits alongside Empire of the Summer Moon and The Demon of Unrest.

This month’s book club selection is “No Cop City, No Cop World” edited by Micah Herskind, Mariah Parker, and Kamau Franklin. Book description: A collection of essays from the Stop Cop City movement on the fight for police abolition and for a liveable planet for all, with gripping reporting from activists on the ground and rousing articles from renowned radical academics. The Stop Cop City movement is a decentralized effort to stop the construction of a $120 million police training facility and the destruction of 170 acres of the Weelaunee Forest outside of Atlanta, Georgia. Join the Athens Area DSA as we protest Chevron’s complicity in the genocide in Gaza and American/Israeli war profiteering globally! Chevron is the main extractor of fossil gas claimed by Israel, bringing Israel hundreds of millions of dollars annually in revenues. This money helps finance Israel’s war chest and its regime of apartheid, settler colonialism, and military occupation against the Palestinian people. Our chapter, as part of the larger #BoycottChevron national campaign, reached out to the management of this Chevron location with a simple request: we asked if they could take 1 minute to sign on to a letter from Chevron franchise owners around the country to the Chevron CEO voicing their disapproval with Chevron’s financing of the state of Israel. Time and again, store management met us with the same response: they’re simply “too busy” to stand up for human rights and stand against genocide. Let’s show them that the people of Athens are not too busy to stand up for human rights! We’re calling on the Athens community to join us in boycotting the Chevron at 723 Boulevard until they agree to sign on to the national letter against Chevron’s complicity in genocide.
